Rory set up the HTA Sustainable Futures team, a specialist unit within HTA Design LLP that focusses on sustainable design, energy analysis and prefabrication. He has been closely involved in the development and implementation of thinking around sustainable housing in the UK. He led the sustainability strategy for the competition-winning Hanham Hall project, one of the UK’s largest zero carbon housing schemes, and followed this project through its construction to completion and beyond. He and his team have built up considerable expertise in the field of energy, sustainability, building physics, microclimate and retrofit and they deliver our expertise and strategic guidance on many projects in the UK from single family homes to large scale masterplans by providing early stage advice, preparing sustainability reports and certifying the final buildings. They include advice on Designing for manufacture and Assembly(DfMA) in their services as they know that this can have a significant and beneficial impact on the sustainable outcomes of projects, helping to achieve performance targets, lowering embodied emissions and contributing to the circular economy. This expertise has led Rory to co-author a book on this topic, the Modular Housing handbook, published by RIBA Press. Currently HTA is implementing the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge across their workload and will be reporting on this annually to the RIBA. Additionally, Rory chairs a working group for the Construction Leadership Council on client adoption of MMC and regularly presents to conferences and universities about our work and contributes to trade press and national press on sustainable design.
