NEW LONDON AWARDS 2022
Shortlisted in the TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE category
Hackney Central station has long suffered from problems of overcrowding and a lack of accessibility. This project to open a new station entrance in the summer of 2022 (on an abandoned car dealership site the Council purchased) will transform the experience for passengers arriving at the station, providing a more welcoming arrival, allowing more direct access to the town centre and helping ease congestion.
Sustainability is at the heart of the design of the new station entrance, where there are new cycle spaces, trees and greenery, living roofs and green walls, a new water fountain for thirsty passengers and a food and drink kiosk run by an ethically minded local family business.
The new entrance also brings practical considerations to the fore, through a simpler interchange with Hackney Downs and local bus services and a new signalled crossing on Graham Road helping pedestrians leave and access the station more easily.
