London College of Fashion

Under Construction

The new home for the London College of Fashion, conceived as a 21st century workshop, combines free spaces for learning, studying and social interaction in a rich multi-level internal environment.

The proposal to relocate UAL:LCF to East Bank provides the opportunity, for the first time, for all the College’s diverse activities to be co-located ‘under one roof’. It currently has over 5,000 students enrolled across the Fashion Business School, the School of Media & Communication and the School of Design & Technology. The new building will provide 38,400sqm of gross internal area arranged across fourteen floors to accommodate a broad range of different spaces to satisfy the requirements of each School.
Environmental considerations have played a key role in the evolving design of LCF: from the plan arrangement to maximise the number of naturally lit and ventilated spaces, through to the final specification of materials. Indeed, the technical requirement to provide stack ventilation has led to the design of a sequence of separate open plan teaching spaces at the heart of the building connected by a continuous and dynamic vertical route: encouraging staff and students to use the stairs and promoting collaboration between the different Schools that the co-location to Stratford offers.

The largest building of the Stratford Waterfront cultural and education buildings, the new home for the London College of Fashion is conceived as a 21st century workshop, its design inspired by the 19th century mill buildings common to many industrial cities, and indeed, this particular site. Bringing together an institution currently operating in six sites across London, the new London College of Fashion will be first time that all its departments will co-locate together under one roof. When completed, the building will be one of the largest dedicated to the study and research of fashion in the world.
