Senate House Steps

Built

The Steps pavilion is a 7.3m high structure that provides spaces for the community to meet, relax, and traverse, whilst enhancing greenery, preserving views and encouraging activity.

The Steps are part of the University of London's campus within Malet Street Carpark located at the west entrance of Senate House, a Grade II* listed landmark. The pavilion has become a canvas for opportunity with the accompanying wildflower gardens, and landscaping that has revived the underused space. The 7.3m high ascending steps provide spaces for the community to meet, relax, and traverse, whilst enhancing greenery, preserving views and encouraging activity through strategic staging.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
