New London Architecture

St Paul's Churchyard

Built

The project transformed the approach to St Paul's Cathedral from the South Bank via Millennium Bridge, creating a new civic space by converting a coach park into a welcoming green oasis.

This scheme transformed the southern environs of St Paul’s Cathedral into a world-class public space. The project was delivered in three phases: the first created wider footways and a much larger pedestrian crossing to cope with the number of people using the area; the second opened up Festival Gardens to the public by creating a gentle slope in the previously flat gardens to provide level access; the final phase saw the closure of the coach park and the creation of a new public green space.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
