High-rise housing: challenges and solutions

Half-day conference

Friday 27 May 2022
08:30 - 12:30

This half-day conference explores the numerous challenges of tall buildings and presents innovative solutions to high rise buildings.
London’s housing sector is facing a three-way crisis driven by COVID, Brexit and fire safety. A discussion that used to centre around delivery and numbers, is now affected by inviable business models, significant inflation around build costs, and skyrocketing service costs. With fire safety up in the agenda and upcoming new regulatory frameworks, buildings CLT and timber in construction are seen with less keen eyes.

With a worrying fall in housing starts, could this situation be a catalyst for innovative housing solutions evolving MMC, retrofitting and futureproofing the existing residential fabric, and ultimately delivering much needed homes? Looking at NLA’s latest London Tall Buildings Survey, with more than 88,000 new homes estimated across the entire tall buildings pipeline, residential buildings constitute the majority of tall buildings in the survey. Are tall buildings an ecological solution for cities facing housing shortages?

This half-day conference explores the numerous challenges of tall buildings and presents innovative solutions to high rise buildings that aim at unlocking a housing sector under pressure.
