The Well-line addresses London’s increasingly urgent pollution and congestion problems. It will convert the disused underground Post Office Railway – London's
longest brownfield site running for six miles from Paddington to Whitechapel – into a new hi-tech logistics supply line which could reduce the number of goods vehicles in the city centre by 60%. This large reduction in delivery vehicles would also allow for the consideration of the pedestrianisation of key retail areas in London, such as Oxford Street, which the Well Line runs under. Increasing pedestrianisation of central London streets has been considered in the past, but has been deemed problematic due to traffic implications it would cause. As the Well-line would reduce traffic on the road, considerable further public realm amenities and space could be incorporated in the capital. Also, detailed public charrettes were held as part of the development of this project, including sessions at the Royal Academy of Arts.
