Leisure for London: Exercising Innovation, Powered by PechaKucha

Talk

Wednesday 17 January 2024
18:30 - 20:30

Join this Pecha Kucha to hear how built environment professionals are innovating to create leisure spaces for Londoners.
Exercising more has been shown to correlate with improved physical and mental health, lower levels of loneliness and higher rates of volunteering. The benefits of exercise to our wellbeing are well documented, creating a drive for facilities and spaces that can meet the demand for physical recreation space.

At the same time, 38 per cent of Londoners reported the cost-of-living crisis had either a significant or somewhat negative impact on their ability to exercise, according to research carried out by the charity, London Sport, earlier this year. In this context, publicly accessible parks and open spaces are especially important, with proximity to nature also being closely linked to wellbeing. How can our industry work with communities to co-design facilities for exercise and prioritize inclusivity and accessibility?

This Pecha Kucha brings together a range of projects at different scales demonstrating how quality design can facilitate physical activity for all Londoners.

The format, Pecha Kucha (ペチャクチャ), was devised in Tokyo in 2003 by the English architect Mark Dytham and has turned into a massive global celebration of design, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. The format makes presentations concise, keeps things moving at a rapid pace and holds its audience.
