New London Architecture

On Location - Brixton

On Location

Monday 13 June 2022
13:00 - 19:30

This NLA On Location conference presents the community led regeneration of Brixton and will hear updates from Lambeth Council on the new emerging schemes being seen within the area.
The vibrancy and history of Brixton is unquestionable. The area has always been a place of thriving culture and has put London on the map for delivering a foray of great musicians, innovators and even a prime minister and London mayor. Brixton has a rich history which has been imprinted on the countless changes to its urban fabric and has shaped the Brixton we see to this day. Brixton’s architecture has always been infused by the people within it and responded to the changes throughout time. In 1948 the Windrush generation brought a strong afro Caribbean demographic to the area that imbedded Brixton with west Indian culture, such as a strong musical reggae and dub legacy and foods and goods seen in the popular markets to this day.

Brixton has always been an area that has embraced its history and advocates for its uniqueness as a lively multi-ethnic place. The substantial input that Brixton has over its future development has been rooted in the community since the riots. Brixton has very much demonstrated itself as a place with a strong presence and voice; an area that fought for the ownership of its portrayal. Brixton’s regeneration has in the past been contested but recently has been spotlighted for its community driven focus on development. Lambeth council has been a driving force in the collective led regeneration and the area has seen an increased investment coming through for schemes.
We reserve a number of free tickets for local community organisations. Please contact morgan.lewis@nla.london if you would like to enquire about these spaces.
