Strand Aldwych is a new kind of social city space, carved out from a heavily trafficked gyratory.
Lined with renowned institutions, Strand and Aldwych were roped in the 20th century into one multi-lane one-way gyratory. Heavy traffic and narrow pavements pinned pedestrians in along the Strand.
Over the past eight years, LDA Design and Westminster City Council have worked to remove traffic from Strand from Waterloo Bridge to St Clement Danes. Now there is a generous performance space for the educational and cultural institutions along the Strand to curate. Beautiful, tranquil gardens surround Grade 1* jewel St Mary le Strand Church, which previously stood on a traffic island. Aldwych has become two-way, and more pedestrian-friendly with new crossings. This £22 mn project demonstrates a shift in how we view our city streets. SAVE Britain’s Heritage has described it as “the best and most enlightened example of good town planning since the creation of Covent Garden Piazza in the 1970s.” The tour will be guided by the lead landscape architect, LDA Director Cannon Ivers.
Please note this is an in person event. Capacity for this event is 30 and tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
