New London Architecture

Aldgate Square

Built

A transformative new public space located between a School and St Botolph without Aldgate Church, including a central lawn area flanked by generous raised planters and seating.

The redevelopment and transformation of Aldgate Public Realm involved re-routing the existing gyratory to create one of the largest open spaces in the City.

The busy roads have been replaced with pedestrian-friendly streets and a central main square, a new pavillon and greening where people can convene, relax and socialise. The square unites two heritage-listed buildings, and has significantly improved the area's appearance and the air quality within this part of London.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
