Canary Wharf - Greening of the Estate

Under Construction

Canary Wharf Group (CWG) presents ‘Greening of the Estate’, a pioneering partnership with The Eden Project (Eden) aimed at further enriching biodiversity and sustainability.

Through strategic landscape planning and green infrastructure, CWG aims to create a dynamic ecosystem that not only enhances urban sustainability but also fosters deeper connections with nature in the city.

Central to this partnership is the transformation of Middle Dock into a vibrant space for arts, culture and entertainment.

In 2022, CWG announced a unique partnership with Eden, embarking on an ambitious journey to enhance biodiversity within Canary Wharf whilst also providing Eden with a London base.

The partnership was born out of a desire to establish Canary Wharf as a global example of best practice and innovation in biodiversity in a dense urban environment, demonstrating the harmonious coexistence of nature, industry, and commerce.

Together, the partners unveiled proposals for the creation of a new green spine running through the centre of Canary Wharf, complimented by an array of green public realms, parks and gardens, waterside access, performance spaces, new bridges, boardwalks and floating pontoons.

This new masterplan is being supported by the renowned Howells architects. Our approach has been to consider the wellbeing of the individuals and communities that use these spaces, ensuring that this project realises the partnership’s ambitions for urban environments.

The first milestone in activating this new green spine is the transformation of Middle Dock, due to open to the public this autumn.

The dock is being completely reimagined as a vibrant hub for arts, culture, and water sports such as paddleboarding, open water swimming and kayaking.

Key proposals for the Middle Dock transformation include:
• Extensive planting to boost biodiversity
• A raised platform over the Dock, creating a new public space and performance venue
• Utilising the Dock for leisure activities including swimming and water sports
• Floating boardwalks and gardens that will provide greater opportunities to engage with the water
• New bridges that will improve access and connections between the north and south sides of the Dock
• An abundance of new trees, planting and biodiversity initiatives
• Seating areas around the edges of the Dock, inviting the community to interact with the water
• Improved connections and enhanced activation of the docks surrounding Canary Wharf
• New sports and leisure offerings, including open water swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding

This project is featured as a case study alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
