City of London Smart Carpet

Proposed

Smart Carpet is a dynamic surface treatment to transform a high street into an multi-functional system, prioritising user demands. Winner of the City of London Smarter Cities Competition.

‘Smart Carpet’ is a dynamic surface treatment. It transforms a high street into an intelligent multi-functional system, prioritising user demands. It encapsulated the idea of a flexible street, supported by various paving modules, incorporating modular street furniture, LED lighting, and the ability to generate energy and live data to manage street conditions. Using Cheapside, London, as the study area, the concept utilised the latest communications and transport technology.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
