NEW LONDON AWARDS 2020

Shortlisted in the Placemaking category
Dinosaur Swing Bridge is a lightweight, perforate pedestrian bridge with an integral drawbridge plank that will enable controlled and secure access to Dinosaur Island in Crystal Palace Park.

The Dinosaur Swing Bridge project grew out a collaborative cycle of learning and teaching, between Friends of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, Tonkin Liu, engineers Arup, and local fabricator Cake Industries. The new permanent bridge will access islands where the first reconstructions of 21 extinct dinosaurs are, and where PaleoPlanting reflects 400 million years of geologic time. The Grade 1 Listed ensemble is a significant heritage embodying the democratisation of scientific knowledge. Due to poor and limited access, they have been declared ‘vulnerable’ by Historic England.
