Gillett Square

Built

The masterplan for Gillett Square in Hackney was about understanding, supporting, nurturing and prioritising the activities that already took place in the area.

The masterplan for Gillett Square focused on understanding and nurturing the activities that already took place in the surrounding streets and prioritising them.

The project saved Victorian Terraces from demolition, helped save the local cinema, built London’s only live poetry venue, created an arts-based creative working community, rehoused the Vortex Jazz club, diverted European funds to east London, and transformed an underused carpark into a busy urban village green for a diverse community.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
