Harold Moody Health Centre (HMHC) is conceived as an agile, future ready civic neighbourhood health hub that places resilience and renewal at the centre of the Aylesbury Estate regeneration. It aligns with the NHS 10 Year Plan and embodies a people centred, community first approach capable of evolving with changing neighbourhood needs. Commissioned by Southwark Council and Notting Hill Genesis, the project advances the South East London Integrated Care Board’s ambition to deliver equitable and longterm health outcomes.
The project’s purpose is to bring together multiple GP practices, Guy’s and St Thomas’ community health services, staff facilities and an Early Years Nursery across three to four floors, forming an integrated ecosystem with the adjacent North Building, home to a library, play and stay, café, surrounding a new public square. This cluster strengthens cohesion and creates a wellbeing hub, where interconnected uses reinforce wider neighbourhood identity.
The strategic vision is supported by design principles focused on long term robustness co-location of compatible services, operational resilience, community connectedness, adaptability to evolving healthcare models, cross cultural clarity, and strong urban relationships. These principals allow the building to respond to demographic change, clinical evolution and the area’s diverse cultural fabric.
Sustained stakeholder collaboration ensured that design decisions reflected real operational needs and built long term ownership. Thus, the health centre is named after the progressive and pioneering Dr. Harold Moody, a black GP who set up his own practice in Peckham SE15. The selection of the name was the outcome of a wider public consultation, led by the NHS.
The resulting design provides barrier free access, a welcoming and legible arrival sequence and intuitive wayfinding. Abundant daylight, outward views and a durable, warm material palette establish a calm, healing atmosphere that enhances user experience and supports wellbeing.
