The Olympic Steps complete Quintain's transformation of Olympic Way. This globally-known processional route to Wembley Stadium is enhanced and expanded, fit for a 365-day neighbourhood.
Olympic Way is one of the most famous streets in the UK, taking you from Wembley Park Station into the heart of Quintain’s Wembley Park neighbourhood and the National Stadium.
In the last seven years Quintain, in partnership with Brent Council, has revolutionised the pedestrian experience, creating a modern public space that works no matter if you are heading home, arriving for the cup final or going shopping.
Olympic Way is now 50% wider and perhaps the most striking change is the removal of the concrete monolith ‘pedway’ up to the stadium. Replacing the pedway with a set of steps and 4 high-capacity lifts resulted in the creation of 12,150 sqm of new usable public space, linking the Brent Civic Centre, Arena Square and improving pedestrian connectivity across the site to Union Park. The Olympic Steps accommodate a large, roof-lit undercroft suitable for community activities all part of Quintain’s strategy to create a 365-day neighbourhood no longer limited to hosting large event-days. This central route is also the starting point for the Wembley Park Art Trail and home to Boxpark Wembley, independent coffee shops, a bakery and restaurants.
At the foot of the Olympic Steps, Quintain developed Samovar Space – an area designed by and for young people in recognition of the value of their role in inclusive urban design. It is a sociable, open-air space providing a hang out spot for the young people in the local community.
Olympic Way also now features the ‘Avenue of Champions’ - 24 species of tree in pairs from temperate zones around the world, greening, increasing biodiversity and creating shade along the length of the iconic walkway.
In 2024 Olympic Way is a bustling, safe, beautiful walking route that unlocks 85 acres of Wembley Park and attracts 17 million visitors a year. Its improvement was made possible by Quintain’s stewardship of the estate & coordination of many smaller projects.
Cllr Shama Tatler, Brent Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Highways and Planning, said:
“Olympic Way is a processional route for millions of visitors and these improvements will help make it a safer, more attractive and desirable location. It will become a destination in itself and mean that we’ll have more visitors coming here on non-event days to places like Boxpark, the new Wembley Park Theatre or one of the many bars or cafés – all of which will create an economic benefit that will be felt much further afield than Wembley, which of course is great news for Brent businesses and local jobs.”
