South Quay Plaza

Built

Contrasting the urban intensification of Canary Wharf the South Quay Plaza masterplan introduces 3 acres of much needed public greenspace associated with three new residential buildings.

Contrasting the urban intensification of Canary Wharf, South Quay Plaza introduces 3 acres of public greenspace, rescuing a vacant plot that has been closed to the public since the 1996 Docklands bombing. Two thirds of the site are released as car-free public realm, introducing over 320 mature trees to a site with none before development. A flourishing piece of biodiverse parkland is created, revitalising the dockside, repairing the urban fabric and forging new pedestrian connections.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
