New London Architecture

St Mary Axe, City of London

Built

A car dominated street was pedestrianised to create a public realm micro-park, rich in biodiversity and respite. The scheme is a testbed for future public realm improvements at St Mary Axe.

A car dominated street was pedestrianised to create a new public realm micro park, rich in biodiversity and respite. The design balances the requirements of The City, the aspirations of the developer of 70 St Mary Axe, and the challenging ground conditions of existing services to introduce urban greening and pedestrian priority to a key route through the heart of the Eastern Cluster. The scheme is a catalyst for future public realm improvements along St Mary Axe.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
