New London Architecture

Thames City (Phase One)

Built

Located in one of London’s most ambitious regeneration zones, a new residential district fosters a sense of community and also a multi-generational appeal.

Transforming London’s former fruit and vegetable market that was completely publicly-inaccessible, Thames City (Phase One) provides an attractive, pedestrian-friendly part of London open to the public. The district is designed to resemble the historic estates of central London, with residential buildings organized around a garden square. Two high-rise residential buildings rise from a landscaped podium. The podium cascades down to the first portion of a new 14-acre linear park.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
