Placemaking

Championing Good Places for All

As cities grow denser and global populations rise, access to well-designed public spaces has become essential to urban living. Parks, pedestrian-friendly streets, and active public spaces play a vital role in health, wellbeing, and social cohesion. However, initiatives like Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and outdoor dining schemes have shown that transforming public spaces is not without its challenges. The key to successful placemaking lies in collaboration between stakeholders to create socially inclusive and financially sustainable places.

NLA’s year-round Placemaking programme explores the role of active placemaking in regenerating London’s town centres, streets, and green and blue spaces. It highlights the importance of culture, heritage, and community representation in shaping inclusive, engaging places. By promoting best practice in design, management, and long-term stewardship, the programme aims to ensure London's public spaces work for all its residents and visitors.
