Join our annual Hotels check in, which this year takes the form of a PechaKucha showcasing the latest hotels research and projects.
Savills’ 2023 UK Hotels Spotlight outlines that London’s hotel performance has accelerated, driven by the return of international travel. With global air travel forecast to increase by 19 per cent by 2025, compared to 2019 levels, London is expected to remain a lead performer in the UK going forward.

The success of the hotel industry rests on consumer habits and the sector’s ability to respond. With the return of business travel, the rise of digital nomads and working from home, travel habits are also shifting to take advantage of a more flexible working pattern. A new typology of business hotel is emerging, where guests are offered space to live, co-work and socialize.

According to the KPMG UK Consumer Pulse survey published in June this year, taking a summer holiday was the most common priority from available summer budget, despite cost-of living concerns. In the 2022 Booking.com Sustainable Travel Report, 81 per cent of respondents from the global travelling community confirmed that sustainable, responsible travel is important to them. ESG considerations are therefore increasingly informing hotel design choices.

How are hotel schemes accommodating mixed-uses, activating underutilised spaces, and adding value for local communities? What opportunities are there to restore London’s historic building stock and reduce the operational carbon of hotels?

This Pecha Kucha brings together voices from across the built environment community to explore how a range of hotel projects are addressing key challenges in the sector.

The format, Pecha Kucha (ペチャクチャ), was devised in Tokyo in 2003 by the English architect Mark Dytham and has turned into a massive global celebration of design, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. The format makes presentations concise, keeps things moving at a rapid pace and holds its audience.
