Newson’s Yard is a former timber yard, built in the nineteenth century on a landlocked site in central London. With many independent makers, dealers and designers basing themselves nearby, this project has repaired the building and repositioned it as a focal point for the Pimlico Road Design District. Accessed through a low entrance between shops, the airy, double-ended central arcade has been retained with retail spaces and eating places arranged either side.
The original brick was retained, and the Victorian metal structure was restored along with the timber-framed rooflight, setting the tone for design community focused on originality, quality and sustainability. There are retail seven units: the larger two with primary frontage/access off Pimlico Road, and five smaller units accessed from within the yard. In future the new retail yard space could be utilised for art installations, events and pop-up exhibitions throughout the year.
