The Power of Norwood High Street

Built

A joint submission for high street renovation: a pilot project converting a derelict off-license to workspace; a digital engagement; and an area-wide workspace strategy for the high street.

A Small Studio held a month-long digital consultation on ‘The Power of Norwood High Street’. They worked with different local demographics to get a series of proposals to revitalize the role of Norwood High Street. Based on the findings, they changed the use of a shop into a creative co-working space that provides affordable and flexible working space locally. This is a pilot project for how to innovate high streets and increase their occupancy levels by shifting the current use.

A joint submission with Station to Station BID and London Borough of Lambeth for high street renovation: a pilot project converting a derelict off-license to workspace; a digital engagement; and an area-wide workspace strategy for the high street.

Making High Streets Work (MHSW) is a programme of projects designed to increase the amount of workspace in West Norwood and Tulse Hill (WN&TH) by activating underused spaces and vacancies within existing properties. The project was successful in receiving HS4AC funding from the Mayor of London.

MHSW aims to builds upon the area as a ‘15-minute city’ whereby residents have access to jobs, amenities and community opportunities within such walking or cycling radius. WN&TH is well positioned to offer this, with good local amenities, a traditional high street with a diverse mix of independent retailers, chains and healthcare services; adjacent to Lambeth’s largest industrial estate and business centre which provides a mix of light industrial and office space.

The scheme is supported by a built pilot project that has been successful in activating the high street and creating a new workspace in a formerly abandoned commercial premise.

Vote for this project in the People's Choice Award. The deadline for voting is the 8th October, 23:45pm.
