Green House - New London Awards 2023 Winner
Winner of Environmental Sustainability Prize
Green House is located on a small back lane in Tottenham, once occupied by market-garden orchards and greenhouses. The design draws on the green history of the site, blurring boundaries between inside and outside, and re-greening a once-unloved site.
The house is designed to be low carbon both in construction and use. The block form of the house optimises form factor and thermal efficiency, and the cross-laminated timber frame sequesters carbon. The house is fossil-fuel free, heated by an air-source heat pump, and powered by solar panels on the roof.
Fabric-first and passive design principles have been applied throughout; a south-facing planted façade with sliding external screens assists in shading and cooling and a riad-style central atrium maximises natural daylighting and enables passive cooling via stack-effect ventilation.
Green House provides a prototype that could be replicated on other restricted sites, providing bright, comfortable, flexible and sustainable family homes.
