New London Awards 2021 Winner - Ibstock Place School
Winner in the LEARNING category
Designed to provide a warm and welcoming dining experience for pupils aged four to 18, large open spaces are paired with carefully scaled annexes for smaller groups and a 'secret' sixth form study. A cloister running the full length of the building opens to an established orchard and offers a connection back to the original manor house in which the school was established. Timber linings, natural light and garden views complete a calm, contemplative space.
We enjoy building with wood for its low carbon impact; visual warmth; the quality and programming benefits that prefabrication of timber components affords; and because it aligns with our pursuit of long-lasting quality through durable materials and careful detailing. Our entry draws on research and collaboration to harness the potential of timber for excellence across a building’s many facets: its use as main material for structure and finishes, supported by passive measures such as lanterns for stack ventilation and daylight, and a colonnade for shading/cooling, and on-site renewables grant

Great to see architecture for this kind of school doesn’t have to look like Harry Potter. There’s a contemporary quality too.
