New London Awards 2022 Winner - 16 Chart Street
Winner in the RETROFIT category
16 Chart Street has been designed as a flexible commercial building that can adapt and evolve over its life span, with an emphasis on reducing destructive, high-carbon activities. The design of the building is inherently adaptable by virtue of its simple plan and reductive, accessible servicing strategy, allowing for future reuse without significant internal modification.
Located in a predominantly residential area in Old Street, the project took a vacant building and secured its long-term future through careful and considered design; its subsequent occupation bringing additional life to the street through the active yard and deliberate visibility into the building, as well as a number of social benefits including offering increased passive surveillance. The project takes inspiration from the buildings industrial form and the local context’s pitched roofs whilst taking advantage of its orientation.
