The Paper Garden - New London Awards Environmental and Sustainability Prize Winner
The Paper Garden is Global Generation’s new home. Global Generation creates educational and leadership opportunities for young people, involves families and school classes in creative ecology projects and provides an immersive green oasis for local communities.
The construction process itself has become an integral part of Global Generation’s engagement activities with corporate- and community volunteers working together. With an uncompromising focus on re-use, the project sets a precedent for sustainable construction whilst unleashing the potential of the construction process to contribute to greater community.
Working closely with British Land, AECOM, Watermans, Sweco, Mace, Wates, Galldris and BRCS, the architects took a radical approach and repurposed a disused industrial shed, retaining its structural steel frame and concrete slab. The team developed a flexible and adaptable design framework that would allow us to incorporate reused materials as they became available and used low tech construction methods easy to learn and accessible for volunteers and teenagers.
