‘The Belt’ is an ongoing photographic series by Neil Montier, which depicts a place that blurs the division between fiction and reality. In this series vast landscapes are occupied by modernist structures, that contrary to their intentions sit more like reminiscent monuments than objects of utopia.
The landscapes and structures that make the work have all been taken from different locations discovered in the peripheries of London, which have been digitally merged to make the narrative of ‘The Belt’.
There is no definitive time or region where this narrative takes place, though it hints at being a reference to British idealism. In this series we are faced with a range of landscapes that at first could be taken as documentary but they also have the capacity to fall into the realms of fictional of the fantastical. The approach I have to my work comes from a range of different sources including traditional landscape photography, graphic design and animation to maps and grids.
