Learning Round-Up April-July 2019

Thursday 25 July 2019

Since Easter the NLA Learning team have delivered a range of engaging projects for children and young people at NLA and The City Centre. This term we have:

  • Welcomed 41 school groups (1,204 pupils in years 5 to 12) to a range of workshop at our galleries supported by industry volunteers including Sustrans, AKT II and PDP London. These workshops were inspired by NLA’s exhibitions and events programme with themes covered including housing in our Sketch-Up workshop, model making responses to LFA’s benches competition and our popular Tall Buildings Engineering STEM challenge.
  • Facilitated five work experience placements in built environment industry companies for pupils in year 12 at Brampton Manor Academy (Newham).
  • Collaborated with Arup and Gadiner & Theobald on a series of four workshops for year 5 from Nelson Primary (Newham) using Lego to engage pupils with careers in the built environment via a project that helped them to learn through play about the London Plan and sustainable future city design. This project was generously supported by the London Real Estate Forum.
  • Welcomed 60 year 10 pupils to London Real Estate Forum from Hampstead School (Camden), Frederick Bremer Academy (Waltham Forest) and City of London Academy (Islington). Pupils took part in guided tours of the LREF exhibition, speed-networking with delegates representing a huge range of roles in the construction and property industry and attended our careers conference to hear from inspiring speakers including Mark Farmer, Elsie Owusu and Jules Pipe.
  • Ran a series of children’s events for London Festival of Architecture including Inflatable Architecture for 8-12yrs, Sketch-Up for 14-19yrs and storytelling and crafts for Under 5s around the NLA model. We also collaborated with the Guildhall Art Gallery for Open House Families offering drop-in design activities at The City Centre and London’s Roman Amphitheatre as well as City of London model talks led by local primary school children.

Coming Up
  • Next week sees the return of our annual Architectural Design Academy for 16-18yrs which, this year, is housing themed to coincide with NLA’s two recent exhibitions Factory Made Housing and Public Housing: a London renaissance. 15 young Londoners have applied to take part in this free intensive week of design activities, site visits and speed-networking with built environment professionals. They will work with a freelance artist to create a zine responding to London’s housing crisis with their own design vision for the future that they will present to a judging panel on the final day of the course. This experience is a fantastic CV building opportunity for all the young people involved many of whom have expressed an interest in studying architectural design subjects at university.
  • In the first week of August we will also be running a fun-packed holiday course for 8-12yrs. In this free course younger kids will take part in a range of architecture themed activities and trips and design their own ideas in response to NLQ’s recent ‘40 Ideas for London’ call-out. Watch this space to hear what our young Londoners will come up with!
