Oriel St Brides blends retention and cultural sensitivity to create an uplifting environment that innovates reuse and raises performance, wellbeing, urban quality, and community identity.
Located within the Fleet Street Conservation Area, Oriel St Brides embodies a bold vision for sustainable, heritage-conscious and wellbeing-focused workplace design, combining cultural sensitivity with innovative reuse.
Addressing the shortcomings of the existing building, the redevelopment transforms Oriel St Brides into a cohesive and harmonious workplace with a singular identity, while strengthening its relationship with the surrounding historic context.
Retaining 90% of the original fabric, the façade is carefully reimagined to overcome the introspective and confined character of the existing building. Enlarged windows and an intelligent passive façade strategy significantly improve daylight penetration and strengthen visual connections to the Fleet Street Conservation Area, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
Oriel St Brides is extended using salvaged façade elements, avoiding the carbon impact associated with new materials. Designed to support both physical and mental wellbeing, the redevelopment introduces bright, naturally ventilated workspaces with occupant-controlled openable windows, maximising access to fresh air and thermal comfort throughout.
Prioritising targeted, low-carbon interventions over large-scale replacement, a striking four-storey oriel window frames dramatic views of Grade I listed St Bride’s Church, creating a strong sense of place and strengthening occupants’ connection to the City’s urban landscape.
Landscaped roof terraces across multiple levels provide restorative outdoor spaces and urban gardens, offering moments of respite alongside exceptional private views across the City.
At street level, the currently underused St Bride’s Courtyard is transformed into a climate-resilient and tranquil pocket garden, creating a calm and inclusive public retreat. Developed in close collaboration with the St Bride’s Institute and St Bride’s Church, the courtyard celebrates the area’s rich printing heritage, reinforces community identity and enhances the pedestrian experience.
Through sustainable, people-focused design, Oriel St Brides delivers a healthier and more uplifting workplace environment centred on wellbeing, connection and respect for its historic surroundings, benefiting both occupiers and the local community.
