Built
Brixton Rec’s public space, facade and unused spaces were reimagined with new workspaces, lighting, and signage, honouring its legacy and emphasising its role as a community and sports hub.
The project builds on Brixton’s civic society, commitment and creativity by working with different people in different ways to improve the Grade II listed Brixton Recreation Centre - sports and community centre, and Brixton Station Road and Beehive Place.
The project constitutes the Rec’s first major investment since its completion in 1985 and listing in 2016, with deliberate and equal care given to the changes made to its listed fabric and the social and cultural role it plays in the community, including Black British history.
muf architecture/art worked closely with the hyper-local community (supported by the more than just client) Lambeth Council : a series of complementary interventions were co designed and delivered to respond to the issues and ambitions expressed by shop owners, market traders, charities, shoppers, leisure centre users and sporting clubs.
