Courtyard for a Wine Merchant

Built

An old side return infill to a large victorian house is removed to create a small Courtyard. The space provides light, fresh air and engagement to the openings that look onto it.

Rather than provide an addition, the project takes away an existing side return infill to create a new courtyard. A new concrete box dressed in oak creates an outdoor platform accessed directly from the lower ground floor kitchen, and below provides cellar storage for the client, a wine merchant.

A flush one-way mirrored door offers privacy to the basement level whilst reflecting the courtyard back onto itself. The existing party wall is painted red. The colour seeps through the openings that overlook, creating an inside-outside dialogue that invigorates both house and courtyard.
