Culture Mile

Proposed

A vision and strategy for the Culture Mile BID area with transformational and welcoming public realm improvements that boost appeal, functionality, and establish the area's identity.

The Culture Mile, a dynamic area within the City of London, is evolving. Home to the iconic Barbican, the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and soon to welcome the London Museum at Smithfield, the area is transforming as business diversifies, rhythms of use and activity shift, and visitor numbers grow. The Culture Mile Business Improvement District, in partnership with the City of London, cultural institutions, and developers, is embarking on an ambitious mission: to reimagine the public realm to meet these demands and elevate people’s experience of the area.

Charged with invigorating the area, AR Urbanism, Steer, and Authentic Futures crafted a Public Realm Vision and Strategy. Drawing inspiration from a rich history and anticipating future change, our approach proposed impactful ‘urban acupuncture’ to streets and spaces. Aiming to spark interest, catalyse change, and enhance vitality, the proposed improvements will boost appeal, enhance functionality, provide a more welcoming environment, and establish the Culture Mile as a destination.

Improvement opportunities were developed with close consideration of synergies and requirements of local stakeholders to maximise impact and build consensus. A wide range of opportunities for change were identified from localised interventions to major transformational projects. Three key ‘pivot’ projects were conceptualised:

Coleman Street: Proposed pedestrian and cycle priority route with restricted traffic hours, highquality surfacing, lighting, and planting. Timed closures could enable “lunchtime street” events with temporary seating and stalls.

St Giles Cripplegate Church Public Space: Proposed sensitive enhancements including greening, feature lighting, improved seating, heritage interpretation, and a small cultural event area, respecting the listed Barbican Estate and nearby residences.

Aldersgate Street: Proposed transformation from a four-lane road to a two-lane street, creating a wide linear park on the western side featuring informal play, public art, seating, a small event space, and extensive planting for workers and residents.
