The client’s brief was to open and unify the Victorian villa to better suit modern family living. Emphasis was placed on reimagining the lower ground floor from a dark pokey warren into a light open-plan kitchen and living space. A two-storey brickside extension provides a generous staircase, at a scale in keeping with the existing house, and the sculptural volume re-orientates one’s arrival into the kitchen. The garden is accessed through a rear infill extension and excavated terrace, with full-width glazing set behind brick columns. A full refurbishment of the upper floors was also undertaken.
