GUrL (Gendered Urban Landscapes) uses participatory art practice to address gender marginalisation in urban space, with a focus on teenage girls who often feel most excluded.

GUrL (Gendered Urban Landscapes) uses participatory art practice to address gender marginalisation in urban space, with a focus on teenage girls who often feel most excluded. Through fleeting occupations of spaces that use sound, movement, and props to claim space for self-expression, GUrL shifts how teenage girls perceive, and are perceived in public spaces. Working in Berlin over 6-months, we devised collective performances from street karaoke to protests, claiming space to simply “be”.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
