Hambrough Tavern is a heritage-led, community-driven scheme delivering 116 Build-to-Rent homes above a pub and community space, contributing to Southall's regeneration.
The Hambrough Tavern site in Southall balances heritage and regeneration. The disused pub is reinstated at street level, bringing the site’s historic use back to life. It includes 116 new Buildto-Rent apartments, offering urban living designed for longevity, community and wellbeing. Positioned at the junction of The Broadway and the Grand Union Canal, the building forms a new gateway into Southall. A communal roof terrace and first-floor amenity garden create spaces for interaction, supporting a future-focused residential community.
The scheme places an emphasis on placemaking and public engagement. Shaped through close consultation with the local authority and local residents, led to refinements in colour, massing and ground-floor activation.
A characterful architectural response to place, the scheme revives a lost community anchor and transforms a derelict brownfield site into a vibrant new development. The reinstated tavern and new community space enhance Southall’s social infrastructure and civic identity, contributing positively to the area’s ongoing regeneration.
The architecture celebrates local heritage, taking cues from the iconic Martin Brothers pottery, whose celebrated work once emerged from Southall itself as well as drawing on inspiration from the bright rich colours from the local culture inspired by the brightly coloured fabrics found within the markets and shops.
