This project was the transformation of a space previously used for Medical Records, creating an Oncology Outpatients department - a need identified by the Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust.

Located at Hammersmith Hospital, in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, this project was the transformation of a space previously used for Medical Records, then temporarily a Vaccination Centre.

A need was identified by the Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust to provide additional clinics to see a growing number of oncology outpatients. Following a consultation process, a brief was developed with a schedule of accommodation providing 10no. Consult / Exam Rooms; Treatment Room; Phlebotomy; Quiet Space; Staff Room; as well as ancillary support spaces.

Hospital visits can evoke feelings of anxiety and stress so any design in the hospital environment has to support the amazing work the clinical team perform, to provide the best experience possible for staff, patients and their families.

Located on the Ground Floor of an existing building on a dense hospital site, the space benefitted from windows on 3no. faces, but with restricted views and limited sunlight. The clinic rooms were designed to run down either side with an offset corridor, with waiting, offices and staff rest also making use of the natural light available. Natural light supports well-being of staff and visitors, but it was important to link the design to nature through the use of plant imagery, the use of colour and artwork.

The use of easily identifiable colours assisted by plant imagery and clear signage, creates an environment that is calming and is easy to navigate by patients. Wayfinding and finishes were based on identifying the emotions the environment was looking to promote to counteract the feeling of those visiting.

Working with the users we spoke about the importance of clarity and strategies for wayfinding. These discussions enabled us to developed a palette of colours and imagery that are easily identifiable, work holistically, and would provide inclusivity.
