North London Collegiate School - Ideas Hub and Reception Building

North London Collegiate School are developing a new Ideas Hub, to facilitate a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) curriculum, and to be the main school entrance and reception.

Construction of a new Education and Reception building in North London.
A high specification building fabric will minimise both heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. The fabric will also be well sealed, preventing uncontrolled airflow with its associated heat loss in the winter.
A mixed mode ventilation and heating strategy will be applied to the majority of spaces. Spaces will be natural ventilated in the summer and mechanically ventilated in the winter with high efficiency heat recovery. Recovering the heat from the exhaust air reduces the heat loss associated with the provision of fresh air, reducing the size of the heating system and associated energy consumption.
During the summertime, ventilation and cooling will be provided passively via natural ventilation. This reduces the annual energy consumption associated with mechanical fan power and the need for an active cooling system.
A heating system fed from an electric ASHP (air source heat pump) will offset the remaining heat loss. This aligns with the decarbonisation of the National Grid, offering significant carbon savings across the lifetime of the building.
A PV array provides a further reduction in annual carbon emissions.

This project proposed the construction of a new education and reception building for this NorthLondon college. During the summertime, ventilation and cooling will be provided passively via natural ventilation. The IDEAS Hub is proposed to be fully electric, with no provision for gas. The building is being designed with fabric first approach principals with low u-values and air tightness, which reduces the demand for heat, and consequently the impact on energy consumption. As space heating demand reduces, the electrical demand of other aspects have a larger impact.
