Steel Warriors Calisthenic street gym

Built

A new outdoor gym created using two tonnes of steel from knives confiscated over a two-month period by the Met Police with 50% of the gym contains recycled knife steel composite.

Collaborating with Steel Warriors, a London-based anti-knife crime charity, Heyne Tillett Steel designed and constructed a new outdoor calisthenics gym, made from recycled knife metal. Steel Warriors was founded in 2017 by Benedict Wintour and Pia Fontes, and their mission centres around challenging conventional approaches to addressing knife-related violence across London. With three now built and many more planned, the first gym for the initiative was launched in Poplar’s Langdon Park.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.
