Sutton Life Centre

Built

Sutton Life Centre is an education and community facility in Sutton, redeveloped to meet demand for high-quality, local post-16 places for young people with SEND.

Sutton Life Centre is a collaborative education and community facility in the London Borough of Sutton, redeveloped in response to the growing demand for high-quality, local post-16 education places for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The Centre offers a range of specialist and community-focused facilities, including:
• Orchard Hill College Centre – offering specialist education and training for 16-25 year old students.
• Preparation for Adulthood Hub - run by London Borough of Sutton
• Beans and Bloom Café – public café and workplace opportunity for trainees.
• Community Library – Local Authority run public library and workplace opportunity for young people
• Outdoor Climbing Wall & All-Weather Sports Pitch – bookable public facilities, helping break down social barriers
• Sensory Garden – calming space for college students, assisting in personal regulation and wellbeing.

The Sutton Life Centre originally opened in 2010 as a community hub with youth programmes, a public library, café, and sports amenities. Following a decline in community use after the pandemic, the site was repurposed to meet the urgent demand for SEND places while retaining community access to key facilities.

Management is shared between OHC and the local authority, ensuring the Centre continues to serve both educational and public needs, offering inclusive, future-proofed provision for Sutton’s young people and residents. The new college accommodates up to 77 students aged 16-25 with SEND. The new teaching accommodation would provide a range of standard classrooms, practical training and group spaces, as well as a kitchen and prep area, staff room and offices.

Designed in line with best practice and government guidance for SEND provision (BB104), the Centre prioritises flexibility, inclusivity, and shared benefit for both learners and the wider community, ensuring a sustainable and impactful resource for Sutton’s young people and residents.

"Sutton Life Centre is a place with people in the community at its heart, it’s a place where lives will be transformed, and futures will be built. When community partnerships come together to create something truly unique, it’s a milestone to celebrate, and Sutton Life Centre is a pioneering development. This collaboration has delivered an innovative space for our students and the local community that reflects shared vision, expertise, and commitment – setting a new standard for post-16 SEND provision and what is possible when we work as one.” - Kelly Philips, Executive Principal at Orchard Hill College
