Shortlisted in the RETROFIT category

The former Headquarters of Sanderson Fabrics and subsequently Saga Records - at the epicentre of reggae music in London - The Gramophone Works is a new landmark canal side commercial scheme comprising a mix of refurbished, extended and new build contemporary office spaces. As part of a phased re-development of a historic site, The Gramophone Works delivers a significant new commercial hub for small and medium sized businesses. Phase 1 completed in 2018 involved the comprehensive refurbishment and reinvention of the Saga Centre warehouse buildings, while Phase 2 extends the existing Old Gramophone Works building outwards and upwards to create an exciting CLT and Glulam structured 6 story office building using the latest in timber technology to create a sustainable and healthy workplace environment. The distinctive design takes it’s cues from the industrial heritage of the site as well as historic links to the music industry, creating a vibrant and characterful waterside working campus.

Winner of the ENVIRONMENTAL Prize and shortlisted in the UNBUILT category
The Gramophone Works is a forward thinking new commercial office building which promotes the reuse of the existing fabric, and successfully marries it to new, sustainable building technologies. This narrative is carefully unveiled through the architecture, referencing and exposing both the rich industrial heritage of the original building, and its cultural significance, whilst provocatively using materials for the extension which suggest how new construction and workplace design can be better for the users and the environment on the whole.

Resilient London: confronting climate change

The Gramophone Works is a new landmark commercial development comprising
refurbished, extended and new-build contemporary office spaces for the creative
industries. The building features large, open plan working areas, a canal-side
caf., communal facilities and green areas at ground and roof levels. The existing
concrete-framed building has been repurposed and a new-build extension created
from structural timber, using low carbon construction techniques. By adopting
a sustainable approach to design, construction and operation, the project is an
exemplar of low carbon development.
