An urban circular economy cluster, community & research hub for businesses to develop innovative business models, demonstrating new and replicable ways of creating and capturing value.
The Loop is a new circular economy community, commercial and research cluster for innovative local businesses on the 2012 Olympic site.
Designed to embody circular economy principles both in building design and site operation the project is designed as a kit of parts that will be easy to disassemble and relocate in the future. The site will incorporate full scale samples and excess materials from nearby UCL construction sites. The rain screen facade to the site perimeter will repurpose used materials to create an innovative building skin.
Activities on the site will include businesses who collect and enable recycling of plastic, glass and textiles alongside businesses who repurpose these into new products. A members building will support start up ideas, education and knowledge sharing. There is a strong community element to the project which will be run by Hackney Community Development Trust. The relocated 'Hub 67' community building will provide spaces for local people for events, learning, and getting involved in the circular economy.
Supported by UCL, the project will be part of ongoing research into circular economy materials and building techniques. In addition to researchers supporting the business on site, the site will also provide a test bed and resource for facade designs for architecture students and researchers.
This relocatable project is designed by meanwhile architecture experts Turner Works.
