Our mosque project proposes a new public building for Purley. This community centre is designed for the suburb's Muslim and wider community, creating flexible spaces for prayer, teaching and meeting. The present mosque building is small, unfit for purpose and cannot accommodate the existing congregation. Our approach is an interplay of Western and Islamic architecture, also inspired by Croydon’s civic and religious buildings. Using Sussex & Surrey bricks and tiles, we have designed a building that feels a part of its setting. A minaret doubling as a stair creates a new landmark for Purley.
