The Scoop

Built

The Scoop is a bold Southwark redevelopment, transforming an existing building with a concave façade and blending heritage with innovative workspace design.

The Scoop is a striking concave office building located at 50–52 Union Street in Southwark, London. Set within the Union Street Conservation Area, the project is a thoughtful and highly site-specific response that remodels and extends an existing four-storey office building into a distinctive and future-proofed workplace. It delivers high-quality Cat A office space with a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

At the heart of the design is a playful and innovative curved façade in white glazed brick, carved to frame the circular window of the neighbouring Grade II listed Church of the Most Precious Blood. This intervention not only honours the heritage context of the surroundings but establishes a striking new identity that resonates with both the local community and passers-by. Much loved already, the building creates a bold yet respectful dialogue between past and present.

The project retains three of the four original external facades, minimising embodied carbon, while extending the structure to increase usable space. Relocating the internal core unlocked larger floorplates and improved accessibility, with new facilities and level access from the higher pavement.

The design also introduces a landscaped roof terrace offering panoramic views across London. Influenced by the site’s cultural setting, surrounded by creative venues such as the Union Theatre and Jerwood Space, the scheme embraces the area’s dynamic character. It responds sensitively to neighbouring buildings through detailed massing, softened corners, and material choices that echo local architectural forms.

The Scoop is a confident architectural addition to London’s evolving urban landscape, delivering long- term value to its users and the wider community.
