Built

Rethinking an old side return extension unlocked a new family space, dealing with issue of overlooking, bringing more light into the home and creating a space for the family to congregate.

We were asked to resolve a problem with the layout of a house located in the Whitehall Park Conservation Area in Islington. The house had wonderful high ceilings and well-proportioned reception rooms, but the kitchen was very compromised. It was housed in an old side return extension and accessed through a warren of other rooms.

The project is a good example of using fairly standard materials – patent glazing, brick and block cavity walls – in innovative ways. The oak slatted roof resolves the problem of overlooking from neighbours and hides the somewhat chunky opening rooflights.
