The Woodberry Down Design Studio is a youth-led initiative enabling young residents to shape their estate’s regeneration through design, making and civic participation.

The Woodberry Down Design Studio is a youth-led initiative established to create long-term opportunities for young residents to engage with the ongoing regeneration of Woodberry Down.

Since regeneration began in 2007, Woodberry Down has undergone significant physical and social transformation. Now with more new residents than long-standing ones, perceptions of local identity, belonging and inclusiveness are being challenged on the estate, leading to an increasingly negative perception of the on-going regeneration project, especially among residents aged under 25. Many young people feel disconnected from decision-making processes, as highlighted in the Understanding Woodberry Down report by Social Life published in February 2024. Despite a strong desire to engage, young people remain underrepresented in community activities.

In response, the Woodberry Down Design Studio was conceived as a youth-led model for civic activation. Its first project, the Woodberry Down Pavilion, was designed and delivered as a temporary public structure for the Hidden River Festival 2025, transforming an underused public space into a temporary civic platform for collective activity.

Conceived as both an immediate temporary activation and a prototype for embedding youth-led place-shaping initiatives in long-term regeneration, the Pavilion established a framework and way of working for future cohorts of the Design Studio.

The second cohort will join in November 2026, undertaking a mapping and scoping exercise along the New River Path to identify opportunities for small-scale public realm interventions.
