V&A Raphael Court

Built

Refurbishment of the V&A Raphael Court, transforming the visitor experience through a series of interventions that rebalance the relationship between visitors, the room’s architecture and the artworks

NEW LONDON AWARDS 2021

Shortlisted in the EXPERIENCING CULTURE category
The project set out to effect a radical transformation of the ‘Raphael Court’ with finely calibrated physical intervention into a Grade 1-listed interior. This called for a rigorous design response, rebalancing the relationship between artworks and architecture to improve the visitor experience. We placed a clear focus on Raphael’s Cartoons which have a luminous ‘light box’ quality within a darkened space, while new bespoke gallery furniture presents a more inviting and dynamic experience. Curved acoustic panels reduce noise and visual distraction, creating a calmer, more contemplative setting
