NEW LONDON AWARDS 2022

Shortlisted in the HOUSING and CONSERVATION categories

Westminster Fire Station has two parts: the refurbishment of the existing Grade II Listed 1906 Edwardian building to create a ground floor restaurant and housing above, and a new residential building to the rear of the site, which together define a new garden courtyard.
The restoration of the fire station has involved careful cleaning and renewal of the internal surfaces, including the glazed bricks to the engine bays and staircase, restoration of the metalwork, cleaning and conservation of the brickwork and removal, cleaning and reinstatement of the slate roof.
The external envelope was altered only through the additional of Conservation skylights and planted brass screens, while the interior was updated to create apartments above ground floor level.
The texture and depth of the existing building have been used to inform decisions and material choices in the new building, in order to create a unified whole of old and new around the newly formed courtyard.

Vote for this project in the ‘People’s Choice Award’. The voting deadline is 1 November 2022.
