Delivering Density: Inner or Outer London?

Debate

Wednesday 11 June 2025
18:15 - 20:15

Should we focus on delivering greater density to inner or outer London to accommodate the capital's growing population? Join this debate bringing the housing and planning sectors together to explore this crucial question as part of our annual Tall Buildings programme.
By 2043, it is estimated that around 10 million people will live in London. To accommodate this larger population, should we deliver greater density to inner London or to outer London?

London's existing infrastructure and economic opportunities can support and attract a growing population. However, with a finite amount of land in the capital, increasing density in the inner city risks placing extra pressure on infrastructure and further increasing the cost of living.

Alternatively, improving density in outer London could relieve pressure on the inner-city, spread out economic opportunities and provide a better standard of living for people particularly as they have families and age. Furthermore, parts of the green belt identified as ‘grey belt’, could deliver density whilst mostly remaining untouched.

Join us to hear from speakers from across the planning and housing sectors as they present and debate both perspectives, where the audience can get involved and vote to have the final say.
